Everyone above me is wrong on this: the men in feudal Japan, shaved their heads because they were not samurai. It was a class identification method, those that were just peasants and farmers etc...shaved the top parts of their heads. Samurai are the only ones that grew their hair, and that was the way to identify the clans warriors
