Millions of Romanians watched the rescue effort -- broadcast live on Romania's three television stations -- riveted by the six-hour drama.
Neighbors rushed to the well in the village of Pipera, using spades and their bare hands to try to dig the child out. Soon, television crews arrived.
Unable to persuade Alina to grab ropes so she could be pulled out, rescuers tried lowering two other children headfirst into the well in hopes they could take Alina's hands and pull her to safety. But the children panicked inside the dank shaft and had to be pulled out.
News anchors pleaded with viewers to call in suggestions for rescuing the child.
As night came, a slender teenager, Oana Furnica, volunteered to slither down the shaft, her legs secured by a green rope lowered by rescuers. She plucked a shocked and muddied Alina to safety on the second attempt, grabbing her hands and hoisting her up.
Cheers erupted as Alina and her rescuer were hauled to safety. Villagers wept. Alina's father clung to his daughter, who tightly hugged his neck.
Alina was hospitalized and treated for hypothermia and shock. Doctors said her condition was stable yesterday. The village mayor awarded Furnica a plot of land for her courage and viewers pledged about $5,000 for the teenager.
Amid the rejoicing, there was critical talk that people in Romania too often fall into uncapped manholes and wells.
The open holes reflect a lack of concern for safety and a shortage of government money for public works projects.
Some of the troubles are attributed to thieves who steal manhole lids to sell for scrap.
Marian Vladu, 37, stopped on the way to the post office to describe how her son had also plunged down a well.
"We don't have the right equipment in Romania," she said. "In other countries, there is a rapid reaction force. They even have equipment to save a dog," she said. "My son was lucky because he was sturdy and he didn't fall too far."
